About Omo Valley

The Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia is one of the most culturally diverse places on Earth — a remote region home to over 16 distinct ethnic groups, each with their own language, customs, body adornment traditions, and way of life largely unchanged for centuries.

The valley is named after the Omo River which flows through it, and the region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extraordinary fossil record — some of the oldest known human remains have been found here, making the Omo Valley one of the cradles of humanity.

The Omo Valley tribes are famous for their extraordinary body art traditions — the Mursi with their lip plates, the Karo with their elaborate body painting, the Hamer with their ochre-dyed hair, and the Dassanech with their beaded jewelry.

Visit Mursi Tribe

The Mursi are famous for the large clay lip plates worn by women. Meet this remarkable community and learn about their pastoral traditions and warrior culture.

Hamer Bull Jumping Ceremony

The Hamer tribe's most important coming-of-age ritual — young men must run across the backs of a line of cattle to prove their readiness for marriage. Spectacular to witness.
