About Lake Tana & Bahir Dar
Lake Tana is Ethiopia's largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile — the river that flows north through Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean, carrying 85% of the Nile's total water volume. The lake sits at 1,788 meters above sea level and covers an area of over 3,600 square kilometers.
The lake is dotted with 37 islands, 20 of which are home to ancient monasteries dating back to the 14th century. These island monasteries contain some of Ethiopia's most important religious treasures — ancient illuminated manuscripts, royal crowns, and remarkable religious paintings.
The nearby Blue Nile Falls — known locally as Tis Abay or "smoking water" — are one of Africa's great natural spectacles. After the rains, the falls plunge 45 meters in a curtain of mist and thunder.
